Case Study — NYC Health Ops

Redesigning Compliance for NYC Health Ops

↓72% documentation errors • Lead UX Designer • 2024

The Problem

NYC Health Operations relied on outdated PDF forms and manual workflows that caused frequent documentation errors, delays, and provider frustration. Teams spent hours per week fixing reports to remain in compliance.

My Role

I led UX strategy and design from discovery through delivery. I conducted interviews with service coordinators and administrators, mapped the user flow, and built a new digital tool that aligned with compliance regulations.

User Research

“I’m scared of making mistakes in the notes — I triple check everything.”
“There’s no way to know if I’m missing something unless someone audits it.”

UX Strategy

We focused on designing a system that was smart enough to catch compliance gaps but friendly enough for exhausted staff to trust. The key pillars were:

  • Checklists that guide users through each note
  • Real-time alerts for missing follow-ups
  • Templates organized by workflows

Results

↓72% documentation errors
↑Team confidence in recordkeeping
↓2 hours/week saved per coordinator

Reflection

This case taught me the value of pairing visual clarity with compliance logic. If I were to revisit it, I’d bring in more stakeholder co-design sessions earlier to align goals and build shared ownership from the start.
